Sample PCD questions
You want to upload files from an on-premises virtual machine to Google Cloud Storage as part of a data migration. These files will be consumed by Cloud DataProc Hadoop cluster in a GCP environment. Which command should you use?
- gsutil cp [LOCAL_OBJECT] gs://[DESTINATION_BUCKET_NAME]/
- gcloud cp [LOCAL_OBJECT] gs://[DESTINATION_BUCKET_NAME]/
- hadoop fs cp [LOCAL_OBJECT] gs://[DESTINATION_BUCKET_NAME]/
- gcloud dataproc cp [LOCAL_OBJECT] gs://[DESTINATION_BUCKET_NAME]/
Show answer
A — gsutil cp [LOCAL_OBJECT] gs://[DESTINATION_BUCKET_NAME]/gsutil cp is the correct tool for copying files between on-premises systems and Cloud Storage. It is designed for transferring data to and from gs:// bucket URIs, which is exactly what a data migration requires, and Dataproc Hadoop clusters can read directly from Cloud Storage via the GCS connector. gcloud has no plain cp subcommand for storage, gcloud dataproc cp does not exist, and hadoop fs -cp runs inside a Hadoop cluster context, not from an arbitrary on-premises VM.
You migrated your applications to Google Cloud Platform and kept your existing monitoring platform. You now find that your notification system is too slow for time critical problems. What should you do?
- Replace your entire monitoring platform with Stackdriver.
- Install the Stackdriver agents on your Compute Engine instances.
- Use Stackdriver to capture and alert on logs, then ship them to your existing platform.
- Migrate some traffic back to your old platform and perform AB testing on the two platforms concurrently.
Show answer
C — Use Stackdriver to capture and alert on logs, then ship them to your existing platform. The requirement is faster alerting for time-critical problems while keeping the existing monitoring platform. Stackdriver (Cloud Monitoring/Logging) integrates natively with GCP and can capture logs and raise alerts with low latency, and logs can still be exported or shipped to the existing platform, so you improve notification speed without a wholesale replacement. Replacing the entire platform is high-risk and unnecessary, installing agents only collects VM metrics and does not fix slow notifications, and AB testing traffic between platforms is irrelevant to alerting speed.
You are planning to migrate a MySQL database to the managed Cloud SQL database for Google Cloud. You have Compute Engine virtual machine instances that will connect with this Cloud SQL instance. You do not want to whitelist IPs for the Compute Engine instances to be able to access Cloud SQL. What should you do?
- Enable private IP for the Cloud SQL instance.
- Whitelist a project to access Cloud SQL, and add Compute Engine instances in the whitelisted project.
- Create a role in Cloud SQL that allows access to the database from external instances, and assign the Compute Engine instances to that role.
- Create a CloudSQL instance on one project. Create Compute engine instances in a different project. Create a VPN between these two projects to allow internal access to CloudSQL.
Show answer
A — Enable private IP for the Cloud SQL instance.Enabling private IP on the Cloud SQL instance lets Compute Engine instances connect over the VPC internal network using RFC 1918 addresses, with no public IP whitelisting (authorized networks) needed. This is the recommended, secure approach. Whitelisting a project is not a real Cloud SQL feature, and Cloud SQL roles control database user permissions, not network access from instances. Creating a second project with a VPN between projects adds needless complexity when private IP provides internal connectivity natively.
